SPARKS, Nev. - Stand-up paddleboarding is a sport that's skyrocketing in popularity, and it's even going to be in the next Summer Olympics.
Our area is a mecca for paddleboarders, say experts.
Paddleboarding started out as an ocean sport, and now a local company is making boards that work really well in fresh water lakes.
They say it's a sport you can learn how to do in just five minutes.

2011 has been the year of evolution for long distance Stand Up Paddleboarding. As the year began Tom Jones’ 1507 mile journey along America’s East Coast remained the world distance record for a sport that was growing rapidly in coastal regions, but lagging inland. Then Mike Simpson and Will Rich stepped forward this March, beginning a 1808 mile paddle between Key West and Portland that was to set a new benchmark in the sport.
And then the Summer came....
Blue Ambassador, Dave Cornthwaite, is currently descending the Mississippi River from source to sea by Stand Up Paddleboard, a world record 2500+ mile journey.
The paddleboard which Cornthwaite is using is is built by Reno, Nev. based Lakeshore Paddleboard Company.
