SPARKS, Nev. – Stand-up paddleboarding is a sport that’s skyrocketing in popularity, and it’s even going to be in the next Summer Olympics.

Our area is a mecca for paddleboarders, say experts.

Paddleboarding started out as an ocean sport, and now a local company is making boards that work really well in fresh water lakes.

They say it’s a sport you can learn how to do in just five minutes.

“If you learn how to paddle correctly, then you can just get out there and just go and have a great time, and it’s five minutes,” said Mike Tessier, co-owner of Lakeshore Paddleboard Company. “That’s the exciting thing about this. It’s not like any other sport.”

Scheels says paddleboard sales are way up, and they say it’s a great workout.

“It’s going to work your core muscles, it works your stabilizing muscles. You have to work with your balance, so it really works your upper body, your lower body, and your core,” said MK Udrovich, the Camping Manager at Scheels.

Most paddleboard companies make boards for the ocean, but Lakeshore’s boards are specially made for the lakes in the Sierra Nevada area. They even adjust for altitude.

A nice article on Dave Cornthwaite’s blog about chasing the world record on a SUP – our LPC River Rover to be exact.

2011 has been the year of evolution for long distance Stand Up Paddleboarding. As the year began Tom Jones’ 1507 mile journey along America’s East Coast remained the world distance record for a sport that was growing rapidly in coastal regions, but lagging inland. Then Mike Simpson and Will Rich stepped forward this March, beginning a 1808 mile paddle between Key West and Portland that was to set a new benchmark in the sport.

And then the Summer came. Three men decided to take on the Mississippi by SUP, I just happened to be the third to start. Alex Linnell, a 21 year-old Minnesotan, began on the 1st June and finished his journey on August 9th, claiming two world records, the first to paddle the Mississippi by SUP and the longest distance travelled by SUP.

Blue Ambassador, Dave Cornthwaite, is currently descending the Mississippi River from source to sea by Stand Up Paddleboard, a world record 2500+ mile journey.

The paddleboard which Cornthwaite is using is is built by Reno, Nev. based Lakeshore Paddleboard Company.

“We are proud to support Dave on this epic adventure,” says Mike Tessier, co-owner of Lakeshore Paddleboard Company. “Dave is using our River Rover board which is specifically designed for flat-water touring. It is a great expedition, kind of like back in the days of Lewis and Clark.”

Cornthwaite’s journey, the Mississippi Expedition, began on June 20th, and will take three months, winding through the Upper Lakes and through several major cities, including St Louis, Memphis and New Orleans.

The Expedition aims to provide a platform for flat-water Stand Up Paddleboarding as a healthy, enjoyable sport, linking communities along the waterway, encouraging an appreciation of the Mississippi River through sport and travel as well as highlighting the issues faced by the river.

Cornthwaite is also using the expedition to raise money for the AV Foundation and CoppaFeel! The AV Foundation works in East African schools and communities developing water system infrastructure to ensure the availability of electricity and safe, potable water for all. CoppaFeel! raises awareness of breast cancer.

You can find out more information about the Mississippi Expedition and even track Cornthwaite’s daily progress at www.davecornthwaite.com

About Lakeshore Paddleboard Company
